Classification of Computers 

Computers are classified by two categories:

•    According to their size
•    According to their type

According to their size- There are four types of computers according to their size.

•    Micro Computer
•    Mini Computer
•    Main Frame Computer
•    Super Computer

Micro Computer – Very small in size in size, fast in processing, portable to handle, personal use and low maintenance, low cost are the features of micro computer. Laptops, Notebooks, Personal Computer (PC) are its example.

Mini Computer – Small in size (table size), faster in processing than micro, not portable, official use need maintenance, stores large amount of data, very fast processing are the features of mini computers. Official computers having of all the devices are combined are the example of mini computers.

Main Frame Computer – Large in size, very fast processing can handle more computers at a time connected to each other and it used in Networking environment, job sharing facility, need maintenance, multiuser and multiprocessing environment, high cost are the features of main frame computers. For example Customer care services offices having their type of computer.

Super Computer – Very large in size, fastest processing, handle more computer at a time, handle activities of satellite broadcastings, scientific, researchers, very high cost, very difficult to maintain, multiuser and multiprocessing environment etc are the features of super computer. For example India has a super computer named “PARAM”.

                                     Robot is the latest Super Computer that looks lives a human and can perform same task like us.

According to their type – There are three types of computer according to their type of working.

•    Analog Computer
•    Digital Computer
•    Hybrid Computer

Analog Computer – This indicates the computed value using hand is called Analog computer. Such as watch with hand, Speedo-meter etc.

Digital Computer – This indicates the computed value using digit is called Digital Computer such as digital watch, digital meter etc.

Hybrid Computer – This indicates the computed value using hand as well as digits is called Hybrid Computer, Such as digital Speedo-meter with hand indications etc.
